Grand Canyon fire strands hundreds of tourists.
Wildfires at the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona stranded hundreds of tourists who are being escorted out of the area using dirt roads because the main highway has been closed.
The 58,000-acre wildfire jumped Highway 67, the only paved highway leading to the remote area of the Grand Canyon, park officials said. The North Rim where the fire occurred is more remote and less popular than the park’s main South Rim entrance, which was not affected by the closure.
The fire posed no threat to 800 visitors and 150 lodge and park workers who were stranded. The Associated Press said most of the evacuees were tourists.
“If you have to be stuck somewhere, I guess this is as good a place as any to be stuck,” said one tourist.
