IOWA

The Silos and Smokestacks area is developing new itineraries that examine the debate between large farms using technology, fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides and smaller ecofriendly farms that may not be able to produce enough food for a growing population. The new tours allow groups to visit with agricultural professionals at their places of work and hear both sides of the story.

Visits are included to organic dairies, large grain farms, hog and cattle operations, niche market farms, cooperatives and various farms raising products
in a variety of ways. Farmers are encouraged to discuss their own views and philosophy of farming. Evening dinner presentations by farmers and other
agricultural professionals are used to wrap up each day.

Meals will use products from farms that are visited, with comparison taste testing of like products. The trips are handson and will deliver a learning
experience while being let into real people’s lives who grow our food.
