GTBS launches green tourism week UK
Chester Zoo gets green award
Headline sponsors announced for Green Tourism Week awards launched by the Green Tourism Business Scheme
The Green Tourism Business Scheme is to recognise its highest achievers of the last 12 months with new categories of awards as part of its Green Tourism Week awareness campaign (June 6-12).
The leading eco-label, which features 2300 members in the UK and Ireland, is organising the week to highlight the bottom-line benefits of green-mindedness to tourism businesses.
A total of ten GoldStar Awards will be presented to those companies who have demonstrated the highest levels of green ambassadorship, innovation and cost savings over the last year. The GoldStar Awards are sponsored by sustainable procurement business Beacon Purchasing.
A Best Carbon Footprint award is to be given to the company with the lowest carbon emissions and is sponsored by Ecover environmentally-friendly cleaning products. A Best Performance for Carbon Reduction Award will be presented to the business which has achieved greatest carbon savings and is still available for sponsorship.
The judging panel will include leading environmental campaigner Tony Juniper who is patron of the Green Tourism Week, Richard Hammond of greentraveller.co.uk, and John Firrell, Director of the Considerate Hoteliers Association.
Additionally there will be a Green Traveller Award for a high-profile, environmentally-considerate tourist, to be nominated by members of the public.
The awards ceremony will take place on June 9 at the Royal Thames Yacht Club in London, sponsored by Triodos Bank and with catering provided by Bartlett Mitchell.
Mark Ogden, Relationship Manager in Triodos’ Farming, Food and Trade Team, says, ‘There’s a huge environmental imperative to move to a more sustainable lifestyle across a broad spectrum of areas, food, energy, transport and of course tourism. This is matched by growing public understanding of these issues and an appetite to be able to ‘do their bit’. Triodos Bank is committed to supporting businesses that help satisfy this growing appetite and as part of this we have great pleasure in working closely with the GTBS scheme to drive forward the Green Tourism sector.”
Says Andrea Nicholas, Managing Director of GTBS, “We wanted an opportunity to highlight some of the exemplary practices undertaken by GTBS members and the cost savings they have made and to help educate and inform those businesses who have not yet made a green commitment."
"Holding a focused Green Week with an awards ceremony for some of our greenest members will be a great platform to get out the message that being green can benefit your bottom-line.”
