Harvard health starts sustainable tourism course
Megan Epler Wood will design, implement and lead new sustainable tourism initiative
The Center for Health and the Global Environment launches International Sustainable Tourism Initiative
Recognizing the importance of managing the international tourism industry responsibly, the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the Harvard School of Public Health has asked Megan Epler Wood to design, implement, and lead the new International Sustainable Tourism Initiative (ISTI), which will be housed at the Center.
"The Center for Health and the Global Environment is very fortunate to have Megan leading the International Sustainable Tourism Initiative," says the Center’s director, Dr. John D. Spengler. "Megan’s course on environmental management of international tourism development at Harvard Extension School has opened many eyes to the environmental impact of the tourism industry, and that further steps must be taken to mitigate the impact of billions of travelers worldwide. I welcome her guidance and decades of experience in developing ISTI and believe that it will make a positive difference."
The formation of ISTI is consistent with Harvard’s mission to play a leadership role in mitigating the effects of climate change.
ISTI will convene leaders from governments and industry, and partner with experts across Harvard to conduct innovative research on how best to develop and manage the growth of tourism in a way that will benefit our people, planet, and the tourism industry. Stay tuned for updates as the initiative develops.
