Hawaii car rental fleets still down 40 per cent
The availability of rental cars in Hawaii has plunged 40% since the start of the pandemic as prices skyrocketed. The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) says demand remains high with more and more visitors flocking to the islands.
A HTA report said fleet sizes shrunk as car rental operators sold off older vehicles to stay in business as tourism and business travel dried up last year.
The rental car crunch has seen visitors resort to renting U-Haul tricks in order to get around. HTA is encouraging visitors to use alternate transportation options where available.
