Hawaii hiking trail closed after dozens of hikers become ill
A Hawaii hiking trail has been closed off after dozens of hikers came down with illness.
Health officials say at least 37 have contracted highly contagious norovirus.
It began early last week on the Kalalau Trail, according to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.
“We had officers on the ground monitoring the trail and asking people to leave,” said Patti Jette, a DLNR spokesperson.
“Their primary job was checking on people’s safety because obviously people are getting very sick.”
The trail is a major hiking route and a challenging one, along the Napali Coast.
“For many people, this is a bucket list hike, It’s a very challenging hike, both in length and trail difficulty,” Jette said.
It is expected to be closed until at least mid-September
“This is a very concerning and rare occurrence, magnified by the extreme remote nature of the Kalalau Valley,” said Division of State Parks Administrator Curt Cottrell.
“We appreciate the DOH guidance in helping manage and mitigate this isolated outbreak.”
