Hawaii Tourism Authority issues new Maui update

Access to parts of West Maui will remain off-limits to tourists until at least the end of August, the Hawaii Tourism Authority said in a new update for tourists.

Travel to other parts of the island is allowed, including Kahului, Wailuku, Kihei, Wailea and Makena.

The area closed to visitors covers Lahaina, Napili, Kaanapali and Kapalua.

“In the weeks ahead, collective resources and the travel industry must be focused on the recovery of residents who lost loved ones, homes, their belongings, and businesses,” it said.

Fire crews are still sifting through buildings destroyed by the fire, and aim to have this all completed by the weekend.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green issued an updated emergency proclamation which stops non-essential travel to the West Maui area.

“Visitors in West Maui have largely heeded the call to leave the island,” it states.

“Hotels and other accommodations are needed for displaced residents and emergency workers.”

Several hotels remain without power and water.

Those that are operating are housing employees and local residents who lost their homes.

Airbnb has announced similar plans to make housing available for up to 1,000 local residents and relief workers.

Most major airlines with services into Kahului Airport have announced change fee waivers for customers to reschedule travel free of charge.

Relief donations can be sent through the Maui Strong Fund, which is managed by the Hawaii Community Foundation.
