The Hawaii Tourism Authority wants to get the message across to all travelers: Kauai is open for business.
More than 28 inches of rain drenched Kauai’s North Shore a week ago resulting in widespread flooding and landslides.
The HTA said the far northern communities between Wainiha and Haena are still cut off to traffic while highway repairs continue but elsewhere in Kauai it is business as usual, and tourists are being urged to visit.
"Before the thunderstorm, Hanalei was bustling with business because of tourism. Visitors can help with the north shore’s recovery by patronizing Hanalei’s restaurants, retail shops, specialty stores and activities that support the livelihoods of so many area residents," said HTA president George Szigeti.
Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Mark Perriello said travelers have been rightly worried about whether they should still go ahead with planned vacations.
"Would-be visitors have been calling the Chamber of Commerce non-stop following this weekend’s flooding and asking if they should cancel their trip. Everyone should check directly with their accommodations before traveling. With some exceptions, Kauai is open for business, including Hanalei."
Garden Isle businesses are struggling to attract visitors, with sales about 75% down, Kauai business owner Jimit Mehta told local media.
