Heathrow plans hike in landing fees

Tuesday, 1 July 20143 min read

Heathrow Airport is planning to increase its landing fees by 20% to fund the £1.7 billion cost of building a third runway.

The airport’s new chief executive John Holland-Kaye said it wanted to raise the landing fee from £20 to £24 per passenger.

British Airways’ parent IAG said Heathrow was already the most expensive hub airport in the world and charges "should go down rather than up".

Heathrow’s landing fees are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority, which will have to approve any increases.

Holland-Kaye told the Financial Times he was confident Heathrow would win government approval for a third runway, and he did not rule out building a fourth in the future.

An Airports Commission is currently considering several sites for another runway for the southeast of England, including Heathrow, but the Government has said a final decision won’t be taken until after the next General Election.
