Heathrow promises to extend night curfew – if it gets a new runway
Heathrow Airport has promised to cut night flights and reduce both noise and pollution if it gets the go-ahead for a new runway.
Its promise, reported today by the BBC, is in line with the recommendations of the Airports Commission which has said that the airport is the best choice for a new London airport, but with severe environmental restrictions.
The Commission, led by Howard Davies, has recommended a curb on night flights and limits to overall noise, along with guarantees that local pollution won’t increase.
Heathrow has now said it will meet the conditions in the Davies report and extend its night curfew from 4.30am to 5.30am.
Chief executive John Holland-Kaye told the BBC the airport was going beyond the recommendations of the Airports Commission.
He said it was confident it could create a ‘cleaner, quieter Heathrow delivering more for the UK economy and that clears the way for the prime minister to make the right choice to expand Heathrow and deliver a stronger economy’.
