Heathrow submits plan for third runway
Heathrow Airport will reveal details of its plan for a third runway later today when it submits its proposal to the Davies Commission set up by the government to look at increasing air capacity in the southeast.
Heathrow chief executive Colin Matthews has already told the commission the UK is at risk of losing its "hub status" unless it expands Heathrow, despite an earlier promise by the airport not to apply for permission for another runway when it was seeking planning consent for Terminal 5.
The Davies Commission, chaired by Sir Howard Davies, was set up last year to examine how the need for additional airport capacity can be met in the short, medium and long term.
It is expected to recommend options by the end of this year, but will not submit its final report until after the next general election in 2015.
