High-speed rail link proposed for Thai tourism hotspots

Thailand’s Prime Minister has announced a proposal to construct high-speed rail lines connecting capital Bangkok with the tourist areas of Pattaya and Hua Hin.

"I would like to see it happen for tourist destinations like Pattaya and Hua Hin using funding from the state and the private sector," said Prayuth Chan-Ocha, who recently travelled on a bullet train during a trip to Japan.

"I am inviting interested parties to fund and support this idea which should happen in the very near future," he said.

The military backed government has plans for $100bn worth of infrastructure projects in roads, rail and bridges after years of neglect.

One about to get off the ground soon is a joint cross border $12.23bn rail project with China which is hoped will boost trade and tourism.

Construction for this project is due to start in September this year.
