Higher inflation blamed on air fares
Higher air fares were the main reason for a rise in inflation last month to 2.7%, which was up from 2.3% the month before.
Flight prices increased in April due to the late Easter, which fell in March in 2016. This mean that in March 2017, air fares were down 4% year on year, which had a steadying effect on inflation.
Rising prices for clothing, vehicle excise duty and electricity also contributed the rise in inflation last month.
However, a fall in oil prices, leading to a drop in petrol and diesel costs, slightly offset this.
