Kenyan Children Latest to Benefit from Hotel’s local involvement
Hilton Glasgow has donated £34,000 to the Glasgow-based charity Stewart & McKenna Foundation to support its efforts to provide vital services to children in Kenya who have been left orphaned by AIDS.
The Stewart & McKenna Foundation is helping to fund the Rehema Aids Orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya which helps care for more than 50 children, many of whom will die prematurely due to the infection passed on from their deceased parents. Currently, more than one million Kenyans and 400,000 children in the country live with HIV and AIDS.
Craig Gardner, Hilton Glasgow general manager, said: “The funds were raised via Hilton Glasgow’s annual Foundation Ball which was a huge success last year raising in excess of £80,000, despite the current challenging economic climate.”
“Through the Hilton in the Community Foundation, we have raised money for many deserving local charities and initiatives across Scotland. Thanks to the generosity of our guests and visitors we’re delighted to be able to support the Stewart & McKenna Foundation’s drive towards helping these children in Kenya.”
The Stewart & McKenna Foundation has already pledged more than £1million respectively to charitable causes and the directors aim to pledge a further 40 percent of their personal wealth to support worthwhile projects.
The funds come via the Hilton in the Community Foundation which was founded in 2000 as Hilton Worldwide’s charity dedicated to supporting young people worldwide in the communities that Hilton serves.
In 2009, the Foundation helped more than 100,000 young people have a brighter future, awarding 205 grants totaling £724,000. The Foundation has supported a wide range of charities in Glasgow including Bobath Scotland, King’s Theatre Glasgow, the 77th Glasgow Disabled Scouts, Glasgow City Mission and Down Syndrome West of Scotland.
