Hoi An puts culture before karaoke

Thursday, 2 August 20073 min read

HOI AN — Authorities in the central province of Quang Nam have banned enterprises from opening karaoke bars and discotheques in the ancient town of Hoi An through to 2010.

They hope the move will protect the cultural integrity of the area.

Despite the proposed ban, local media sources claim hundreds of bars are applying for new karaoke licences.

Local government officials say the provincial authorities’ decision is appropriate for preserving the cultural and living spaces of the ancient town, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

“Tourists come to the town because of its cultural depth and calm lifestyle. If there were dance halls and karaoke bars, they would disrupt the ancient space that is a huge draw for Hoi An,” said an official.

Vietnam News Service reports that, at present, there is only one bar and discotheque in the town, on Nhi Trung Road, but almost all of the visitors are local residents.

Businessman Tran Cuong said the regulation limits nightlife for the 1000-plus foreign visitors staying in the town on any given night.

“As it is, there are few options in the areas surrounding the ancient town to meet the demand for entertainment for foreign tourists,” he added.

Nguyen Van Lanh, head of the Culture and Information Office in Hoi An, said local authorities will zone karaoke bars in concentrated areas suitable for entertainment facilities but still convenient for visitors.

Lanh says the township will develop karaoke bars in new urban areas to the northeast, prioritising projects for the Cua Dai coastal area and Bac Son Phong, an entertainment area under construction, as well as those near hotels and resorts.
