ABTA Convention special report: Seven out of ten young Brits travel abroad for stag and hen parties but nearly a quarter of them have their celebrations cut short by holiday horrors ranging from losing their travel documents to getting arrested.
According to research carried out by the Foreign Office, the uninhibited nature of hen and stag parties means that this is the most likely group to experience problems abroad. Of the 24 per cent who ran into problems, half lost or had money, credit cards or tickets stolen. Meanwhile, just over a third became ill or were injured and a quarter were arrested.
Hen and stag parties are the least likely to prepare properly for their trips abroad. Most are ready for the sun, with 65% packing sun cream; sex, with 38% taking contraception; and looking good, with 73% buying new clothes. However many don’t take basic precautions, with only 31% taking a copy of their passport and almost 50% travelling without valid insurance.
Over half of partygoers expect the organiser of the event to make all the travel arrangements and research a destination and do not know about local geography, laws and customs, or where to turn if things go wrong.
Foreign Office spokesman Steve Jewitt-Fleet said: “Many of these situations can be avoided if every individual in the group makes a few simple preparations before they travel.”
