Hong Kong braced for more protests as holiday approaches

Wednesday, 1 October 20143 min read

More protests are expected to take place today in Hong Kong on the eve of Chinese National Day, a holiday that marks the founding of Communist China.

It kicks off the Golden Week holiday period which is traditionally a money-spinner.

Numbers of protestors have dwindled since the weekend, but more pro-democracy protesters are expected to take to Hong Kong’s streets tonight.

On Monday night, tens of thousands of singing and chanting protestors defied tear gas and police baton charges to continue their campaign to block streets.

Some demonstrators wore masks and used umbrellas or plastic capes to protect themselves, prompting the phrase ‘umbrella revolution’ to trend on social media.

Riot police who used force over the weekend have since been withdrawn and the protests have remained relatively calm.

Hong Kong leader CY Leung has urged protestors to ‘immediately’ stop their campaign.

The Hong Kong Tourist board also urged travelers to steer clear of affected protest areas which include parts of Admiralty, Central, Causeway Bay, and Mong Kok.
