Hotel boss fears Boston backlash

Tuesday, 07 May, 2013 0

Jumeirah Group president and CEO Gerald Lawless has called for countries around the world to make it easier for travellers to secure visas.

Speaking at a hotel conference in Dubai, Lawless said he feared that after the bombings in Boston a lot of security people would want to go back, and say, ‘don’t allow these countries to have visas, become restrictive again’.

Lawless also called for developed countries to stop protecting their airlines by restricting access to carriers from elsewhere.

“We don’t need hotel rights to build a hotel in Toronto, so why should our airlines need flight rights to fly to Toronto?” he asked.

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said the region has a number of advantages over more developed markets as it seeks to expand further.

Griffiths said British Airways CEO Willie Walsh has complained he has to get the permission of dozens of separate parties to implement plans to expand at Heathrow.

“When he said that, I thought, I have actually got to walk about 20 yards and I have one person to convince.”
