A Jacksonville, North Carolina hotel evacuated all guest and employees after a suspected carbon monoxide leak.

Fire officials closed the Holiday Inn Express after evacuating the building and 16 people required medical treatment at a local hospital.

Jacksonville Public Safety said the leak was discovered early Friday morning and high levels of the toxic vapor were recorded inside the building.

All power was switched off and the building was ventilated.

Jacksonville Fire and Emergency Services Battalion chief Edward Tallman said the 15 adults and one child are expected to make a full recovery.

He said the cause of the high levels of carbon monoxide is yet to be determined.

Some of those evacuated are homeowners displaced after Hurricane Florence, and are being accommodated at other area hotels.
