Hotel of the Week: Salamanca Wharf Hotel

Hobart’s edgy Museum of Old and New Art, MONA, is attracting enormous interest from inter-state visitors, many from Melbourne hopping over for a long weekend in the Tasmanian capital.

"It is a megaphone for the other attractions of Hobart," says Tourism Tasmania, which has seen hotel, tour and restaurant business lift on the back of interest in MONA.

The Salamanca Wharf Hotel, well positioned within Hobart’s harbourside attractions, including the ferry terminal for departures along the Derwent River to MONA, is riding the MONA wave.

The hotel is also a short stroll from the restaurants, bars and gift shops in Salamanca Place, where the entertaining Saturday craft, wine and food market draws huge crowds.

The contemporary apartment hotel, cleverly designed to slot seamlessly between two converted 1840s sandstone warehouses, has 18 studios and apartments, topped off with four loft-style, 60sqm penthouses overlooking a park. Two of the studios have facilities for guests with disabilities.

Kitchens come with Smeg appliances, granite bench tops, and the well-lit rooms have free WiFi and smart TVs. Most apartments have laundry facilities.

Laurent Dick’s photographs of the Antarctica are featured throughout the hotel, and link to the hotel’s colour themes of strong blues and orange.

The hotel’s ground floor restaurant, Castray Esplanade Food+Wine, is open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. It is leased to Tasmanian foodies Karen Goodwin Roberts and Michael Roberts.

A copy of Karen’s latest book, Island Harvest – A Year in the Tasmanian Seasonal Kitchen – is available in rooms to tempt the taste buds of guests.

Salamanca Wharf Hotel director Shane Pritchard said the hotel attracted good corporate business during the week and leisure visitors at the weekend.

"Our location, and the fact that our apartments are self-contained, is attracting a lot of business," he said.
