A hotel owner and manager have been detained by police after fire swept through an upscale hotel in India, killing two guests and injuring seven others.
Fire broke out on the ground floor kitchen of the Golden Park Hotel in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
Dozens more were woken up and evacuated.
"We managed to rescue 31 people from the hotel. Six of them who were injured were shifted to the SSKM Hospital," a fire department spokesman said.
The cause of the blaze is still being investigated but the hotel reportedly lacked fire prevention and fire alarm systems.
Two people have been taken into police custody," said Sovan Chatterjee, Mayor of Kolkata and minister of Fire & Emergency.
"Fire broke out from the kitchen on the 1st floor and reached the room nearby where the AC duct, electricity duct got involved in the fire and people were working there. Gradually the fire and smoke reached the third floor and the entire four-floor building was affected," said Chatterjee.
