HotelsCombined sees big increase in mobile from US customers

Hotel metasearch site HotelsCombined reports a huge surge in US bookings made by mobile.
The company says bookings via smartphones rose 67% in 2016 while transactions made on a tablet were up 30% year on year.
That compares to just 4% growth for desktop bookings.
"HotelsCombined noticed the shift towards mobile bookings back in 2014. Since then we have seen mobile bookings continue to grow year on year, while desktop bookings have decreased," said HotelsCombined travel expert Chris Rivett.
"We believe that this number will continue to rise as more and more people embrace a mobile or tablet as their primary device."
Top source market for mobile bookings is California while Rhode Island, Vermont, Michigan, Iowa and Indiana recording the fastest growth rates last year.
HotelsCombined said nearly three-quarters of US smartphone bookings are typically made 48 hours before travel.
Despite the continuing rise of mobile use in travel booking, desktop is still way out in front, at least for the initial search.
"It’s clear that Americans are getting more comfortable booking on mobile, but for travel search and discovery desktops are still preferred. Travelers will often sit down at home with a laptop or computer for the discovery phase. After that, there’s usually a mulling period, followed by a decision, and then the hotel booking itself is often made on a mobile device," Rivett said.
