Hundreds of flight cancellation as US hit by tropical storm
Almost 1,000 flights across Florida were cancelled yesterday and today the southern US states were lashed by a tropical storm.
Airports in Miami and Fort Lauderdale took the brunt of the storm, with American Airines and its subsidiary American Eagle worst affected.
Fears are now growing that the storm, Issac, will strike New Orleans on Wednesday, seven years to the day that the city was devasated by Katrina.
It has already left a trail of destruction in the Caribbean, where it caused flooding and brought down power lines. At least eight people were killed in Haiti and three people are missing in the Dominican Republic.
It is now heading towards the northern Gulf Coast with winds of 105mph and it is expected to make landfall on Tuesday or Wednesday somewhere between Florida and Louisiana.
The storm is expected to gather strength, builidng into a category two hurricane within hours. A hurricane warning is already in effect or 300 miles of the Gulf Coast and a state has been declared in Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi and Alabama.
The Florida Keys have been experiencing rain and strong winds, but so far there have been no reports of any significant damage.
