Hurricane-damaged Casino’s landing ashore
The floating casinos hard-hit by hurricane Katrina can be rebuilt on land after Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour signed legislation changing the tourism industry along the Gulf Coast.
All 13 hotel-casinos on the coast were damaged or destroyed by the hurricane 29 August.
The new law approved during a special legislative session allows the casinos to build up to 800 feet inland.
Previously, religious conservatives and other groups fought successfully to keep the casinos off dry land.
The state legalized casinos more than a decade ago but restricted them to water sites.
There’s some speculation the casinos might be rebuilt as mega-resorts, said the Associated Press. That development could turn the gulf coast into a national tourist destination.
