Virgin Atlantic blamed a ‘challenging macro-economic environment’ for a loss of nearly £28.4m before tax and exceptional items in 2017.
The results compare to a £23m the previous year.
Virgin said its finances were affected by the severe hurricane season in the Caribbean and US, industry-wide problems accessing engine parts and adverse exchange rates.
The airline flew 5.3 million passengers in 2017, 0.1 million fewer than in 2016. Load factor fell to 78.3% from 78.7%.
Chief executive Craig Kreeger said: "We continued to deliver industry-leading service in 2017 despite significant operational challenges, and a difficult economic backdrop."
