Hurricane Florence forces Bermuda-bound Norwegian Dawn to sail Canada itinerary

Monday, 10 September 20183 min read

Cruisers looking forward to the sunshine of Bermuda had to make do with the chilly Atlantic Canada thanks to hurricane Florence.

Norwegian Cruise Line made a last-minute itinerary change to sail the colder waters of the North Atlantic and steer well clear of Florence rather than head south to the sunshine.

That unsurprisingly was a major disappointment for many, who had already packed swimsuits and were left with little time to make adjustments.

"We didn’t really get enough time to re-pack or anything, so it was frustrating, to say the least. We understand why they did it, but we’re all disappointed. It would’ve been better if it was another tropical destination, but going somewhere so far north when we were expecting sunny weather and beaches, it was a tough pill to take," said cruiser Cristi Legare as the Norwegian Dawn made its first port call in Halifax.

The ship will also call at Sydney, Nova Scotia, Saint John, and Bar Harbor, Maine before returning to Boston.

Legare was told no compensation will be offered by NCL.

"While we recognize these itinerary changes may be disappointing, our on board teams are prepared to ensure the best vacation experience possible given these weather related necessary changes," the line said in a statement.

The line also amended the itinerary of the Norwegian Escape which was also headed to Bermuda from New York.

It will instead make calls in Florida and the Bahamas.
