Hurricane warning on US coastline

Wednesday, 2 July 20143 min read

Travellers to parts of the US are being warned about the arrival of Tropical Storm Arthur in the next few days.

The UK Foreign Office said the storm, forecast to affect the eastern coastline of central and northern Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, is then set to intensify into a hurricane affecting North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and possibly further north until later in the weekend.

"High winds, heavy rain, rough seas and flooding is expected. Sporadic tornadoes are possible," it warned.

"You should monitor weather reports and follow the advice of local authorities, including if ordered to evacuate."

The storms are due to hit over the July 4th holidays, one of the busiest times for domestic tourism in the US.
