IAGTO strategy planning paying off for Jakarta golf tourism
At the 17th International Golf Travel Market last year, Peter Walton, Chief Executive of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators urged both regional and national tourist boards to set up properly funded golf tourism strategies.
A golf tourism roadmap should be developed in association with the private sector, Walton argued, in order to be sustainable and proactive to changing consumer behaviour in both golf and general tourism.
To assist destinations IAGTO published an Integrated Golf Tourism Strategy Blueprint.
The Association has also been working closely with destinations in Asia, North Africa, the Caribbean and Central America to implement tailor made strategies.
A prime example was Jakarta, Indonesia.
Jakarta has numerous first-class golf courses but has never previously coordinated efforts to promote itself as a golf destination.
That changed with the ‘Enjoy Jakarta Golf’ campaign last year, promoting to 500 golf tour operators worldwide, launching TV and digital advertising and a dedicated website in multiple languages.
This six-month campaign has been seamlessly coordinated with Jakarta hosting the next IAGTO Asia Golf Tourism Convention on 27-30 April 2015.
The event expects to attract over 500 delegates from more than 30 countries including around 150 golf tour operators selling Asia Pacific golf destinations.
IAGTO has also collaborated with the Dominican Republic and is once again supporting the 2nd Dominican Republic Golf Travel Exchange from September 5-10 at Casa de Campo Resort in La Romana.
The event is also officially endorsed by Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism and the National Association of Hotels & Restaurants.
Sandwiched between these two events is the 7th IAGTO North America Golf Tourism Convention in Greater Palm Springs, California in June.
This is the premier commercial platform for golf resorts, golf clubs, hotels, ground handlers and other golf tourism suppliers in the US, Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
