Iberia calls off Christmas strikes

Wednesday, 11 Dec, 2012 0

Iberia staff have called off a series of strikes in the run-up to Christmas but warned that action could be taken in January instead.

Unions representing ground staff and cabin crew had planned six days of walk-outs between 14 and 21 December, but said they have decided to avoid disruption for passengers over the festive period.

However, unions said new action would be considered in January if no agreement was reached over job cuts.

Last month, Iberia’s parent IAG announced plans to cut 4,500 jobs at the Spanish airline, equating to around 25% of the workforce.

The airline group, which also owns British Airways, plans to get rid of a quarter of Iberia’s fleet and cut its capacity by 15%, keeping the most profitable routes.

It warned that if unions don’t agree to the cuts by January 31, it will have to take more "radical action which will lead to greater reductions in capacity and jobs" (see earlier story).
