Inbound tourism up by 10%
Overseas visitors to the UK rose by 10% to 28.4 million in the year to April.
Visits abroad by UK residents increased by 4% to 64.8 million in the same period, according to latest figures from the Office of National Statistics.
The numbers arriving from Western Europe in the year to April 2005 was up by 9% to 18.4 million, from North America by 2% to 4.2 million and from other parts of the world by 22% to 5.8 million.
Western Europe was the most popular overseas destination for UK travellers although numbers were static year-on-year at 49.4 million. Visits to North America increased by 16% to five million and to other parts of the world by 23% to 10.4 million.
In the February-April quarter there were 7.4 million visits to the UK, a decline of 1% over the previous three months. Spending was down by 2% to £3.4 billion.
The number of UK visits abroad also fell by 2% to 16.2 million while the associated spending remained broadly the same at £7.9 billion, according to ONS.
