India's air regulator investigating mid-air near miss

India’s air regulator has started a probe after a mid-air collision between two planes was averted at the last minute.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation will investigate why a IndiGo flight carrying 180 passengers was close to colliding with a government-owned jet operated by the Border Security Force.

It was reported home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi was one of the occupants in the government jet.

"IndiGo flight 6E-653 (Delhi-Srinagar) was maintaining 26,000 feet, reciprocal aircraft was climbing out of 25,000 feet, when our pilot alerted ATC, but before the ATC could react (the anti collision system) alerted our aircraft to take action to avoid any untoward situation," the airline said.

"IndiGo pilot followed standard operating procedures and filed the necessary report. IndiGo proactively informed the regulator," it said.
