Indonesia plans world’s tallest Jesus statue

The world’s most populous Muslim nation plans to build the tallest ever statue of Jesus.

Local news reports say the structure will measure 40 meters in height – 10 meters taller than Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It will be sited on a mountain top in the ethnic Christian Tana Toraja region of Sulawesi Island.

It is hoped it will spur further religious tourism in the area, which is already noted globally for its elaborate animist funeral rituals, which often last for several days at a time.

"There is no need to go to Brazil, we will build the statue on a mountain top," said Tana Toraja regent Theopilus Allorerung.

"From the beginning, Toraja has been blessed by cultural values," he added.

Despite being home to over 200 million Muslims, Indonesia has a very diverse cultural demography with numerous islands with a Christian majority, and famously, the tourist island of Bali is the only major Hindu society outside of the Indian sub-continent.
