InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam Celebrates 150 Year Jubilee with Green Globe
InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam has again been acknowledged for sustainable business in the tourism industry. Ever since opening its doors almost 150 years ago, this luxury hotel has been concerned with its environment and the wellbeing of the citizens of Amsterdam. The hotel takes a special responsibility for the development of the city and supports its local community. Several local initiatives are supported each year including, Only Friends Sports Club, ‘Het Feest’ foundation, and ‘De Waterheuvel’ community.
InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam’s Green Team is responsible for the sustainable operations of the property and this year launched a new approach to engage each and every staff member. Management has placed a new emphasis on team efforts by setting individual goals for the different hotel teams. Because of this method, sustainability awareness of the departments has increased and enabled the hotel to achieve more objectives and greater results.
Anita Bos, General Manager said, "There are so many things that people know or would like to implement that others don’t even think of. The more ideas from our people that we can get, as well as their enthusiasm and engagement, the more involvement and initiatives arise which deliver a responsible business."
This year, a major project contributing to greater sustainability in operations is the renovation of the stewarding area and the purchase of a new dishwasher. This enhancement ensures that significantly less water is used. Last months’ measurements have already indicated a saving of 10% less water, as well as 20% less soap being used.
Sustainability initiatives are also not limited within the bounds of the property. As the hotel’s guests also use products of suppliers and services of external partners, it is the hotel’s responsibility to involve these partners and collaborate for more responsible opportunities. A great example is the co-operation with the hotel’s limousine company. InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam previously indicated that they prefer to use green transport options for guests. The limousine supplier acknowledged this need and as a response purchased two eco-friendly vehicles, a hybrid and an electric car. Other green transportation options for guests are the fleet of bicycles that the hotel owns.
While the hotel preserves its rich history, it endeavours to be more innovative and participates in new community projects. One of the hotel’s more innovative projects this year has been assisting a new film which has been produced to show city life from a different perspective – that of plants and wildlife. This film will be used as educational material for schools and art houses. As a famous city hotel situated along the river, InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam contributed to this project by offering a shooting location and other décor for the filming, which includes the tale of local river creatures.
