InterContinental Hotels hit by data breach

InterContinental Hotels Group has confirmed it was hit by a payment card breach a month ago, revealing payment systems were compromised at a dozen hotels in the US and the Caribbean.

According to an IHG statement, cards used between August and December last year may have been compromised.

“IHG has been working with the security firms to review IHG’s security measures, confirm that this issue has been remediated, and evaluate ways to enhance IHG’s security measures,” it said.

Hotels affected included IHG properties in Washington DC, Florida, Aruba and Puerto Rico.

It affects transactions in restaurants and bars and not for room bookings or any other transactions carried out at hotel front desks.

IHG did not disclose how many cardholders may be potentially affected or if any suspect activity has been reported as a result of the breach.

Investigations are still ongoing with all hotels in the Americas region being checked.

IHG-owned Kimpton Hotels also reported a payment card breach last August and virtually all the hospitality industry’s big players have been hit over the last few years, including Hyatt and Marriott-owned Starwood Hotels.
