International flights to Melbourne suspended after Covid-19 spike

Tuesday, 02 Jul, 2020 0

International flights into Melbourne have been suspended for the next two weeks.

Due to a spike in Covid-19 cases across North Melbourne, all inbound flights from overseas are postponed until mid-July.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews asked Prime Minister Scott Morrison to divert international flights from Melbourne.

Aussie carriers Qantas and Virgin had already suspended all international services but foreign airlines were still serving Melbourne.

They are Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, China Southern, Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways

Malaysia Airlines was due to restart flights to Kuala Lumpur from July 3.

"Due to Australian government restrictions Air New Zealand will not operate passenger services from Auckland to Melbourne until July 14," Air NZ said.

Inbound services are expected to be rerouted to Sydney while outbound flights are still permitted.

Dozens of Melbourne suburbs are now under lockdown, effectively cutting off about 300,000 residents from the rest of the city.

The state of Victoria reported 77 more Covid-19 cases on Thursday, which is the highest daily tally yet.

There are now over 400 active cases.
