Intrepid scoops major sustainable travel award
Intrepid Travel has been awarded the Global Tourism Business Award at the annual Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.
Run by the World Travel and Tourism Council, the awards recognise travel organisations that demonstrate sustainable tourism best practices in their philosophy, strategy and operations.
Melbourne-based Intrepid Travel was recognised for the depth of its sustainability practices that span its entire operations, from fair trade sourcing of its supply chain to its environmentally–friendly practices and the non-profit Intrepid Foundation.
“When we started Intrepid 22 years ago, we wanted to ensure that we were very much engaging local people in our operations and essentially doing the right thing by them,” said Intrepid Travel’s managing director and co-founder, Geoff Manchester.
The judges assessing Intrepid Travel’s application experienced its Active Morocco and Classic Peru trips and assessed the responsible travel and sustainability aspects of these trips.
The other finalists in the Global Tourism Business category were Sabre Holdings/Travelocity Global and Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts.
