An investigation is being conducted after two jets came dangerously close to colliding earlier this month.
An AirAsia jet bound for Auckland came within 150 metres of a Jetstar plane coming in to land on the Gold Coast.
Due to the close proximity, alarms were triggered in both cockpits and the Jetstar jet took evasive action by climbing to a higher altitude.
"During descent, the aircraft warning system alerted our pilots to another aircraft approaching our approved flight path. Our pilots took corrective action to restore the safe distance between the two aircraft," a Jetstar spokesman said.
"The flight continued on to the Gold Coast and landed without further incident. It’s likely that most passengers would not have been aware of the incident."
Authorities said the planes were not on a direct collision course but that is was ‘too close for comfort,’
Under Australian safety rules any two planes should be separated by at least 305 metres vertically.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau confirmed an investigation is underway and a final report would not be released until next year.
