Investigation into fire at luxury Singapore hotel

An investigation is still under way after a fire in the kitchen of a luxury Singapore hotel on Wednesday.

More than 500 people were evacuated when the fire quickly took hold at the Grand Hyatt Hotel near Orchard Road. Everyone got out safely and no injuries were reported.

TV footage showed thick black smoke coming from the hotel but the Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was extinguished by sprinklers fairly quickly.

The blaze started in one of the kitchens at the hotel’s mezza9 restaurant.

The restaurant remains closed but guests were allowed back in the hotel after a wait of about two hours while fire crews doused down all affected areas.

"We extend our sincere apologies to all guests, associates and neighbours for the inconvenience," said hotel manager Parveen Kumar.

Only a month ago Singapore’s Carlton Hotel suffered an electrical fire which led to a power blackout and the evacuation of about 1,000, but again no injuries were reported.
