Investigation into laser beam incidents near US airport

An investigation is taking place after three different planes were hit by a laser beam while coming into land at Dallas Love Field.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the incidents happened on Wednesday evening and affected Southwest Airlines and Virgin America flights coming in from Austin and also a private business jet.

The planes were flying at altitudes of between 3,000 and 4,000 feet.

The FAA said the laser came from an area 11 miles southeast of Dallas and a law enforcement helicopter was sent to investigate.

Last year, an FBI campaign was launched to crack down on the illegal use of laser pointers to distract aircraft.

The crime, which can incur major fines and even prison sentences, has increased significantly since 2005 when authorities first began collecting data on it.
