Jakarta hotel rates defy downturn in Asia
Jakarta has seen the highest percentage rate rises of hotels worldwide in the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI).
The average room rate in Jakarta in the first six months of 2013 was US$134, a rise of 32% compared to first half 2012 (US$102).
Other cities to record big room rate rises were Moscow (up 25% to US$245) and Dubai (up 18% to US$222).
Some of the biggest price falls between first half 2012 and first half 2013 were seen in Seoul (down 22% to US$128), Bali (down 11% to US$138), Cape Town (down 11% to US$159) and Perth in Western Australia (down 8% to US$194).
Worldwide the average price of a hotel room rose by two per cent during the first six months of 2013 compared with the same period last year, according to HPI.
Asia was the only region to see a fall in hotel prices, with a two per cent drop in the first half of 2013.
A number of individual cities in Asia performed well but the depreciation in value of the Japanese yen and the Indian rupee, coupled with a drop in the number of inbound visitors to China, contributed to the price slump.
Occupancy rates across the US were up in the first six months of 2013.
The steepest rises were in the west, with Anaheim, home of Disneyland in California, up 18% to $160, Honolulu up 11% to $250 and San Francisco up 10% to $216.
