Jamaica minister of tourism, Edmund Bartlett recently re-established the National Cruise Council in a bid to compete with neighboring countries and maintain solid growth in cruise arrivals.
Bartlett said its aim is ‘to guide and grow the local cruise economy in a steady and sustainable manner moving forward.’
The 13 member council is chaired by Michael Belnavis and is made up of stakeholders including hoteliers, port authority officials and the tourism ministry.
Although cruise passenger arrivals grew by 23.5% in June, ‘what has not grown apace is the expenditure.’ Bartlett said.
The average spend of visiting cruise passengers is just $87, Bartlett noted, and the immediate target is to boost this to at least $100 in the short term, and ultimately $200 over the next five years.
The core functions of the National Cruise Council will be advocacy, monitoring global cruise trends, and enhancing the experience of cruise ship passengers in Jamaica.
