Jamaica is targeting mid-December for a complete resumption of tourism following Hurricane Melissa damage.
It expects to be fully up and running ahead of the Christmas period, minister of tourism Edmund Bartlett said.
The government has set up a Hurricane Melissa Recovery Task Force and Tourism Resilience Coordination Committee to organize actions.
“Recovery cannot be left to chance. We are aligning marketing, communications, infrastructure repairs, aid, logistics and every enabling support behind a single objective: full industry operation by December 15,” Bartlett said.
“Progress will be tracked through the Ministry of Tourism with regular public updates, so workers, visitors, and partners can plan with confidence.”
The task force is made up of various public and private industry stakeholders like Lloyd Waller, executive director of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre and Adam Stewart, executive chairman of Sandals Resorts International.
The task force will help coordinate readiness across resorts, attractions, airports and cruise ports.
