Japan confirmed it will ban the in-flight use of power banks from April.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has officially notified airlines of the new rules, Japanese media reported.
The updated rules ban passengers from charging their power banks onboard and also using the power bank to charge their devices.
Fliers are permitted to take power banks onboard but must not use them in any way.
It expands previous rules which forbade passengers from placing power banks in bags in the overhead bin.
The ministry said it is also mulling restrictions to limit the number of power banks per passenger, which is something global aviation body the ICAO is considering implementing.
