Japan endsTokyo state of emergency
Japan has officially ended the Covid-19 state of emergency in the Tokyo region. The government cites a decline in cases and the strain on hospitals has eased. Japan PM Yoshihide Suga announced the lifting of the state of emergency in Tokyo and neighbouring Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures.
This is the first step to ensuring the Tokyo Olympics can go ahead this year although it will be a scaled back version with no foreign fans allowed.
Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike says the situation in Tokyo is still ‘severe.’ Officials confirmed the ‘Go To Travel’ subsidised campaign will remain suspended. The campaign had been blamed as a major factor for surging Covid cases across the country in the latter part of 2020.
