Tourism officials in Japan say they have been swamped with applications from foreigners for the recently advertised vacancies for ninja tourism ambassadors.
Central Japan’s Aichi prefecture put out a global ad to hire six full-time ‘ninja assassins’ to promote tourism, and received more than 200 applications within one week.
Satoshi Adachi, from the prefecture’s tourism promotion office said 85% were from overseas.
"We received so many applications and inquiries. We didn’t expect such a huge response from overseas," he said.
From 235 original applicants, they have now selected a shortlist of 37.
This includes 13 from the US, France and Thailand, Adachi said, who will take part in auditions in Japan.
Those successful will be hired for one year on a monthly salary of about US$1,500.
Daily duties will include performing back flips, using the ‘shuriken’ throwing star, and posing for photographs with tourists.
They should ‘enjoy being under the spotlight even though he or she is a secretive ninja,’ the job advertisement said.
