Japan plans to establish preclearance immigration and customs screening in South Korea and Taiwan from net year.
Under the scheme, Japanese customs and immigration officers will be stationed at airports in the two countries to screen passports and luggage prior to boarding a Japan bound flight.
Japan operated a similar procedure in both countries between 2005-2009 and now wants to resume it to cut down on waiting times at immigration and customs checkpoints.
Japan is seeking to speed up passenger processing as it looks to double tourist arrivals to 40 million by 2020.
South Korea and Taiwan were chosen for the re-introduction of preclearance as together, they make up a third of all international arrivals to Japan.
The program may be expanded to other countries in the future.
