Japan to roll out vaccine passport scheme from December
Japan will launch a digital Covid-19 vaccination certificate scheme from December.
The QR code enabled certificates hosted on an app will be used for international travel purposes, according to Nikkei.
There is no definite plan yet to apply them for domestic use, although it may be extended to domestic travel and dining in the future.
The scheme will be overseen by Japan’s new Digital Agency which has just been established by the government.
Less than half of the population is fully vaccinated while about 60% have received the first jab.
The current record of vaccination cards are only issued in paper format.
The government is set to relax some restrictions for fully vaccinated people in the coming days to facilitate domestic travel, business and dining in larger groups.
