Japan is increasingly turning into a wedding destination for foreign couples

Japan is emerging as one of Asia’s most sought-after wedding destinations, as a growing number of international couples choose the country’s iconic landscapes, cultural heritage and world-class hospitality for their big day.

According to newspaper The Japan Times, getting married in Japan reflects a broader trend that is gaining momentum across the country’s tourism sector. As international visitor numbers continue to surge, more couples are looking beyond conventional destinations and choosing Japan for weddings, honeymoons and family celebrations.

The country welcomed a record 42.7 million international visitors in 2025, creating a significantly larger pool of potential destination wedding travelers. Industry forecasts suggest Japan’s destination wedding market could more than double in value over the next decade, growing from an estimated $2 billion in 2026 to more than $4 billion by 2036.

The trend comes at a time when Japan’s domestic wedding market is facing demographic challenges. While the country’s bridal industry remains worth approximately ¥1.84 trillion ($12 billion), declining birth rates and fewer marriages have prompted wedding planners, hotels and resorts to increasingly target overseas couples as a key growth market.

Mount Fuji has emerged as one of the country’s most recognizable wedding backdrops, but it is far from the only option attracting foreign couples.

Historic temples and gardens in Kyoto, luxury hotels in Tokyo, hot spring resorts in Hakone and beachside venues in Okinawa are all seeing increased interest from international visitors seeking distinctive ceremony locations.

Excellence in service and favorable Yen rate

Tourism experts say Japan’s appeal lies in a combination of factors. A favorable exchange rate has made the country more affordable for many overseas travelers, while its reputation for exceptional service, safety and attention to detail adds to its attractiveness. Couples can also combine a wedding ceremony with a honeymoon and extended family vacation, creating a complete travel experience.

For the travel industry, destination weddings represent a valuable high-spending segment. Wedding parties typically generate revenue across multiple sectors, including hotels, transportation, dining, photography, event planning and sightseeing activities, often extending their stays beyond the ceremony itself.

Challenges remain, however. Many wedding venues and service providers still primarily cater to domestic clients, and language barriers can complicate planning for overseas couples. As a result, a growing number of specialist planners are stepping in to help international clients navigate local suppliers, contracts and legal requirements.

With the rising global interest in destination weddings, Japan definitely appears well positioned to become a leading wedding tourism destination in Asia.
