Following the upcoming removal of capacity limits at Newark Liberty Airport, JetBlue is the first airline to announce more flight frequencies.
Starting in the fall, JetBlue will add six more flights from Florida – two more daily services from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and from Orlando, Tampa, Palm Beach International Airport and Fort Myers.
From the end of October, the FAA is reclassifying Newark as a Level 2 airport which will allow for more flights and more competition among airlines.
At the moment there is a limit of 81 flights per hour at Newark, which was established in 2008 to reduce delays.
There are similar slot-based limits at New York JFK and LaGuardia airports.
United Airlines is still the dominant player with about 70% of all traffic at Newark.
The new flights are ‘very good for New Jersey,’ according to Dave Clark, vice president network planning at JetBlue.
"We see this as the first step, but it’s still very early on," Clark told NJ Advance Media.
The carrier also announced the start of Boston-New York LaGuardia daily flights in the fall.
