JetBlue is now back at full capacity to Puerto Rico for the first time since last year’s hurricane.
That is six months earlier than planned, JetBlue said, thanks to ‘improved demand.’
The airline has hired 50 new crewmembers for its San Juan base ahead of the peak summer travel season to handle up to 48 daily flights.
"Our return to our pre-hurricane flight count is a testament to the incredible resilience of Puerto Rico and our crewmembers who kept flights operating during a very difficult period," said Dave Clark, vice president of sales and revenue management.
Last week the JetBlue Foundation pledged $100,000 to fund grants for STEM programs on the island and a second annual Aviation Career Education Academy initiative will take place in San Juan to encourage students to pursue a career in aviation.
"The fact that JetBlue has been able to match seat capacity levels to pre-hurricane figures six months earlier than expected, shows that demand has increased and that we are on track for a historic recovery," said Carla Campos, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Co.
